Let me know if you’re interested in buying it. I still have this manuscript, in my inlaid Mexican trunk. The odd thing about Chapter 5 is that I wasn’t able to write it after I was done with Chapter 4. The rest of the book was written from one chapter to the next, but I knew when I was done with Chapter 4 that I wasn’t ready to take on Chapter 5, so I deferred it for a few years, until I was done with Chapter 9. As a treat for finishing that chapter, I took a trip to Istanbul in the summer of 1999 to watch the total solar eclipse that year, and to gather notes for Chapter 5. The Istanbul I evoke is different from the real one, but then, my writing style is one of imaginal realism anyway. Istanbul is the closest place outside of a novelist’s mind where you’ll find an imaginal reality, a reality which is imaginal unto itself.
